Design Details ― Homes

Sustainable Building Solutions was founded by John Porretto to design and construct high-quality homes that exceeded code in structural integrity, energy efficiency, safety and healthfulness, while featuring architectural beauty, quality and craftsmanship.

Sustainable Building Solutions houses blur the distinction between indoors and out. The rich, exposed wood of the timber framing exquisitely defines the spaces, which are open and flowing. Overhead, the ceilings are planks of heart of pine, which also serves as the subflooring for the second floor. This solid construction assures decades of peaceful living.

An abundance of windows looking onto the marsh and the Intracoastal Waterway permits coastal breezes to freshen the air and ample sunlight to brighten the rooms. Spacious, comfortable porches encourage a relaxed indoor-outdoor lifestyle. Rooms are generous in size where needed, compact where appropriate.

Finishes are rich, yet understated, as befits a coastal ambiance. Materials are pleasing to the senses ― natural and appropriate to the coastal environment. Appliances are top-of-the-line and energy-efficient.

Designs are exquisite, and bear the influence of the late Roger Rasbach, world-renowned architectural designer, who completed the design of the first Sustainable Building Solutions house just before his death.

The Dewees Island Home was featured in the Charleston Post and Courier, American Builder’s Quarterly, and Natural Home and Garden magazine.
