Sustainable Construction ― Homes

This timber frame home with breathtaking views of the marsh and Intracoastal Waterway provides a scenic and peaceful escape from the hurried life.

Constructed by Sustainable Building Solutions while John Porretto was President, the beautiful, sustainable home was engineered for safety, healthy living and ultra-low maintenance. It is located on Dewees Island, South Carolina, a 20-minute ferry ride to fabulous shopping, eating and entertainment in historic Charleston, South Carolina.

Heirloom-quality materials and architectural and engineering design create a strong, enduring and efficient home engineered to withstand 145 mph-sustained winds, exceeding code requirements of 130 mph for 3 seconds.

Approximately 3,700 square feet of air-conditioned space features:

  • An elevator with an 8-foot high cab and a beautiful enclosed timber frame staircase lead to 4 large bedrooms, 4 1/2 baths, 2 gathering rooms with long granite bars, a large fireplace, 4 porches and a large observation deck for optimal privacy and views.
  • Each of the first and second levels has its own laundry facilities.
  • The ground level includes: parking for electric golf carts, a shower, and a fish cleaning area with generous sink and workspace.
  • All cabinets are maple; flooring is reclaimed heart pine and porcelain tile; and interior walls are colored American clay (Green Product of the Year award recipient).
  • Exterior walls are structural insulated panels for strength and energy efficiency; the exterior siding is sustainably harvested cypress; and the roof is a slate-like material with a 50-year transferable warranty.
  • Windows and doors from Henselstone are tilt-and-turn and certified to meet most recent hurricane codes.
  • Casablanca fans throughout; and the heating-ventilation-air-conditioning is geothermal for highly efficient heating and cooling.
  • Water heaters are tankless for efficiency and on-demand hot water; and all appliances and plumbing fixtures are highly energy efficient.
